The Saga continues - the art behind Star Wars: Battlefront

Laser battles, good vs. evil, beautiful exo-planets, epic story. Star Wars is back on the radar. And for a good reason.

One of the best series returns to the big screen this December and millions of fans will immerse themselves again in the Jedi world. As it comes I cannot hide my excitement which overwhelms me when I think that I will sit again in front of the screen and embrace The Force once again, with my eyes wide open to absorb every detail.

Although the last film in the series, which de facto filled the story appeared more than 10 years ago, many things were spoken since and many things happened, especially in the game-industry. Star Wars - themed video games appeared on regular basis and entertained fans and gamers for years and still do.The latest addition landed just in time.

Publisher EA Games released new title of the epic open-world shooter Star Wars: Battlefront. Developed by EA DICE, the game is the third major release in the Star Wars: Battlefront sub-series, and is considered a reboot to the previous games, instead of a sequel.

The game hit the shelves on 19 November and gave the opportunity to get into the skin of a Rebel or Imperial trooper and experience from first hand what its like to fight on the Star Wars battlegrounds from a polished new perspective. It also gives you the choice to rule The Force as Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader or other iconic characters from the original Star Wars trilogy.

The game itself is just beautiful. The planet landscapes are massive - from Endor to Tattooine, they are craft with precision and beautiful visual elements.

The need to create the exciting battlegrounds led the team at EA DICE to various collaborations and different ideating on the endless possibilities of environments that could exist in the Star Wars universe.

DICE's concept artist Anton Grandert developed most of the initial look for the game through various sketches.
For one of the previously unexplored volcano planets - Sillust, Grandert said:
“We wanted to create a planet on our own, first trying out different ideas and then deciding on a lava planet.” When referring to the direction, the concept artist stated, “With black sharp rocks, huge land shifts, red lava, turquoise lakes, and white smoke…everything to make it really colorful yet imposing and threatening.”

Once completed, the team presented the design and direction to Lucasfilm. Collaborating with the teams at Lucasfilm, DICE decided that this visual design would be a perfect look for the planet Sullust, mentioned but not seen in Return of the Jedi. The team had to go to Iceland to explore the closest volcanic landscape to recreate in most accurate way the intense, cold, dark, unstable terrain.

For one of the other environments - the team put their realization of the battle of Jakku, 29 years before its appearance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

In the artwork a Star Destroyer is seen crash landed, on a desert landscape of Jakku, and from its giant metallic body, beneath the steaming engines, a large horde of Imperial ground troops have engaged with Rebel troops, also strangers to the desert planet.

The intensity of the battle was one of the aspects that Anton Grandert wanted to convey when creating the Jakku artwork:

“There’s a David and Goliath theme to this,” said Grandert.
“The epic, huge super structures of the Star Destroyers contrast against the tiny but brave Rebel soldiers fighting the Imperial forces.”
